Why We Lack Confidence

Why we Lack confidence

Lack of confidence is one of the common problems among students of all levels. Speaking in front of a class is one big horrible feat that students always struggle to overcome. Some students will never participate in any activity because they are shy. The idea of speaking in front of a class makes their hands and legs shiver; their face becomes pale. There are many reasons why our students lack confidence. Knowing them will help overcome this problem. Our classroom study atmosphere does not encourage independent learning, which directly affects self-esteem and confidence. Most of the time, students only listen to what teachers say. When students mostly speak, they search for material from their memory. In other words, students are hardly encouraged to speak their minds. Secondly, students hardly collaborate for learning; therefore, they do not get a chance to evaluate their ideas. Many find other students' ideas superior to theirs. Lack of language skills is also an obstacle. Teachers expect students to speak English in the class, and not everyone is good at it. If students try, others laugh at them. It discourages them. Hence, they prefer keeping quiet instead of participating in the class even if they understand the content well. The lack of confidence affects decision-making ability. From buying a pair of shoes or dress to selecting a menu in a restaurant or visiting a place, choosing a career path or job, and many other decisions are difficult to make without consulting others. We cannot make simple decisions for ourselves. Moreover, whatever decision we may make, we end up being dissatisfied with it. Being confident is not only necessary for our academic life, but it has immense value in life outside the classroom. We can take several measures to build confidence and self-esteem. For example, reflecting on our strengths, achievements, learnings, successes, and failures can be a worthwhile beginning. Particularly making the list of activities you are good at and improving them. Additionally, planning your activities and trying to achieve them can be beneficial. It does not mean big plans, but it can be as small as going for a walk or meeting friends. Be your friend to support yourself when you are down and encourage yourself when you are doing right. In addition, try to learn something you have always wanted to. The Internet can be a handy source for it. Finally, if you want to build decision power, feel confident about your decisions, take risks, learn from your mistakes, and accept when you are wrong. Accept compliments, and be optimistic.
